I’m Pregnant from a One-Night Stand. Now What?

When most people think of a pregnancy announcement, they might think of cute surprises and trendy social media posts. However, for some, a pregnancy announcement can be the most nerve-wracking moment of their life - especially if the pregnancy is a result of a one-night stand.

Maybe you had no plans for a second date - now you’ve got some major decisions to make, and you have to be the one to break the news.

What do you say? Where do you start? Figuring out the next step might feel impossible, but HPRC is here to help. Today, we’re sharing some helpful tips on how to tell a one-night stand that you’re pregnant.

Confirm Your Pregnancy

Even if you’ve missed your period or are experiencing other pregnancy symptoms (such as fatigue, nausea, and breast tenderness), the only way to be 100% sure is to take a pregnancy test and receive an ultrasound. Be sure to confirm the pregnancy before making any decisions!

Get Emotional Support

Take some time to sort through your emotions and process your thoughts before jumping to conclusions about the future. Talk to people you trust, lean on them for support, and ask them for practical advice. A strong support system can boost your confidence and help you weigh your options during a confusing, stressful time!

Know Your Options

This unexpected pregnancy may have left you feeling trapped and hopeless, but you have options: abortion, adoption, and parenting. You owe it to yourself to consider each of your choices, so you can make an empowered and informed decision!

As you research, think about which option might be best for you. Do you have any hopes or fears about being a parent? Are you concerned that having a baby could hold you back from achieving your life goals? Ask yourself questions like these to process your options.

You don’t have to make a decision right this second, but understanding each of your options (and how you feel about them) makes the situation a little easier to navigate.

Plan What You Want to Say and Schedule a Meet Up

There’s no easy way to tell someone you barely know that you’re pregnant. If you’re concerned that you might ramble or forget the words, write down what you want to say. You can even practice beforehand, and run it by someone you trust.

Arrange to meet in a public place. This will reduce the risk of things escalating, and make it easier for you to leave if necessary. Get to the point, but try to stay calm, so you can communicate as effectively as possible.

Remember that while you can plan what you want to say, you can’t control his reaction. He may be shocked, and need to be alone to think. Remember, you’ve had a little time to process your thoughts and emotions - allow him to do the same.

While he’s entitled to his feelings, it’s never ok for him to belittle you or lash out. If he reacts violently, remove yourself from the situation as quickly as possible.

What if We Disagree on What to Do?

This is a major decision, and you two may have different opinions on the solution. Don’t allow him (or anyone) to pressure you to make a choice you’re uncomfortable with. Consider attending an options counseling session together to discuss your thoughts and get unbiased facts from a licensed medical professional!
